Paraphrasing is restating an idea in your own words. Effective paraphrasing requires you to genuinely understand the original and then express it differently — not just swap a few synonyms. A poor paraphrase changes "Climate change threatens coastal communities through rising sea levels" to "Global warming endangers seaside towns because of increasing ocean heights" — the structure is identical. A strong paraphrase might read: "Rising ocean levels, driven by climate change, put populations in low-lying coastal areas at growing risk of flooding and displacement." The sentence is restructured, the vocabulary is different, and the emphasis shifts, while the meaning remains intact.
Organizing a research paper follows a clear structure. The introduction presents the topic, provides context, and states your thesis. Each body section develops one aspect of your argument, integrating sources to support your analysis. You must synthesize sources — not just stack quotes. This means comparing sources that agree, identifying where they differ, and showing how they collectively support your thesis. The conclusion synthesizes your findings and states the broader significance of your research.
